The household item which will keep you safe in a hotel room – and only costs £3

No matter how much fun you have along the way, at times travelling alone can be unnerving and make you feel vulnerable.

There are numerous precautions a solo traveller can take while on their trips and which the Foreign and Commonwealth Office promote.

But there’s also a handy tip in case you get anxious about staying in hotels or hostels by yourself – and all you need is one simple household object.

When asked, what the best security device is to travel with internationally when you only have hand luggage, seasoned traveller David Klain shared his wisdom on Quora .

All you need is a rubber doorstop.

“When staying in a hotel,” David explains, “you can put that door stop under the door preventing someone from breaking in (the chain on the door will stop no one). “

Worth a try?

He even goes on to cite how a rubber doorstop could help in an extreme situation saying:

“In the case of a terrorist attack or lone gunman/active shooter incident, typically they will go through all rooms but, if they can’t get the door open, move on to other rooms before working their way back to the doors that wouldn’t open.

“This buys you time for you to get away/police to respond/etc.”

Of course, if someone really wants to enter your room then they may very well find a way to do so.

But Klain’s tip certainly sounds as if it would put someone off enough.

He also adds that “the doorstop can also be used in an office or other location should a situation take place.”
